Western Oregon University, or WOU for short, is a public liberal arts educational institution located in Monmouth, which is a city in Polk County, in the US state of Oregon, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 7800 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Monmouth is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area.
WOU was established in 1856, as Monmouth University, by Oregon pioneers. It currently offers its students, who number approximately 5700, educational programs in various areas of study, including bachelor's and master's degrees, through several departments and academic divisions, among which there is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
WOU's athletic teams are known as the Wolves, which compete in NCAA's Great Northwest Athletic Conference at the Division II level, in 13 intercollegiate sports, for both men and women. Their distinctive color is crimson and their mascot is Wolfy.
WOU's notable alumni are: Kevin Boss - football, New York Giants, Super Bowl XLII, Jeff Charleston - football, New Orleans Saints, Sara Tucholsky - NCAA Softball, Best Moment award at the 2008 ESPY awards, and Ariana Richards - actress.
